Celebrated signature event features new exhibitions at the SCAD Museum of Art and programming with international contemporary artists, including a keynote conversation with honoree Jorge Pardo.

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA — The Savannah College of Art and Design presents the 14th edition of SCAD deFINE ART, the university's annual program of talks, tours, and exhibitions featuring work by contemporary art's most vital voices. This year's dynamic programming, presented Feb. 28–March 2, includes a keynote conversation with renowned Cuban-American artist, sculptor, and 2023 SCAD deFINE ART honoree Jorge Pardo; a screening of Argentine-Israeli video artist Mika Rottenberg's feature film REMOTE; and a keynote lecture by New York-based multidisciplinary artist Rachel Feinstein, among other illuminating gallery talks, panels, and conversations.

The programming complements new exhibitions on view at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, featuring work by Pardo, Rottenberg, Feinstein, and other globally renowned artists including Ann Craven, Hassan Hajjaj, Chase Hall, Gyun Hur, Leung Chi Wo + Sara Wong, Josh Sperling, and Ana Bel Lee Washington — an international roster of artists representing countries and regions including Argentina, Cuba, Hong Kong, Israel, Mexico, Morocco, South Korea, the U.K., and the U.S.

For more than a decade, SCAD deFINE ART has brought together an international roster of culture-defining arts leaders to engage and inspire audiences in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, through unforgettable encounters with contemporary art.

This year’s programming includes a series of in-person artist talks and conversations and a new season of exhibitions at SCAD museums featuring large-scale installations and immersive environments, original commissions, and key works from the museums’ permanent collections. Encouraging deeper engagement with the histories we inherit and the complexities of our daily lives to foster a more connected and compassionate world, SCAD deFINE ART 2022 builds on lessons of the past to create spaces in the present moment to envision a future full of opportunity.

Encounter urgent ideas and pivotal artists at SCAD deFINE ART 2021, honoring Sanford Biggers

For more than a decade, SCAD deFINE ART has brought together an international roster of culture-defining arts leaders to engage with audiences in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, through curated experiences and encounters with thought-provoking work. This year's unprecedented programming includes a series of virtual conversations and a new season of exhibitions at SCAD museums featuring evocative works that encourage greater reflection on the narratives we inherit, the identities we create, and the roles we are expected to play, and ultimately offer a sense of hope for the future. SCAD deFINE ART 2021 transforms uncertain times into opportunities for connection and contemplation, uniting our university and local communities with artists across nations, generations, and mediums.

An annual program of exhibitions, lectures, and performances

SCAD celebrates its annual program of special commissions, exhibitions, lectures, and performances. Taking place Feb. 18-20 at university locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, SCAD deFINE ART recognizes emerging and established artists and visionaries.

Parts of a Whole

SCAD painting professor and alumnus Gregory Eltringham (M.F.A., painting, 1990) builds layered forms in his figurative paintings using small staccato brush marks in luscious hues. A site-specific installation by SCAD printmaking professor Deb Oden employs dense, poetic layering of large-scale prints and personal photographs and items to create a bombastic, vibrant reading of the artist’s hand. In her sustainable practice, Victoria Wanjuhi (M.F.A. fibers; B.F.A., fashion, 2013) uses upcycled fiber swatches, bits of yarn, and other discarded fragments to piece together new forms. Large-scale paintings and installations by Patricia K. Hecht (M.F.A., painting, 2019; B.F.A., art history, 2007) employ floor plans of specific sites that are layered and repeated, creating a dizzying visual overload. Monica Cioppettini (M.F.A. painting) amasses heaps of garish costume jewelry to create glittering, yet aging sculpture and wall-based works. Paintings by Jeremiah Jossim (B.F.A. photography, 2010) and Laura Mosquera use complex patterning in bright hues, flattening the picture plane and creating rhythm and movement through formal means. And Daniel Basore (M.A. fibers; B.F.A., interior design, 2019) sources vintage photography from lifestyle magazines, which he collages into intimate and complex abstractions through historic quilt patterning.
